We have three and a half bathrooms in our home and after twenty-two or so years, every one of them has gone south. That’s the thing with old plumbing: Sooner or later, you’re in the shitter.

So, the first problem that arises with a toilet on the downside is constant running. That drives me batshit crazy as all I can think about is the hit to our water bill, and ours is out of sight, folks. Last month, our city dinged us for over one hundred and seventy smackers. And this is without using our dishwasher, which crapped out soon after purchasing and we haven’t bothered to get it repaired. I don’t take my beloved long baths anymore and have switched to showers. Admittedly, I take lengthy ones but shit, a gal’s gotta have something, no?

Another toilet issue is that the seal around the base starts to erode resulting in leaks that can cause water damage to floors and ceilings. Been there, done that.

And, of course, there is the time-honored stopped-up toilet. Nothing can compare to flushing that bastard and watching the water rise to the top of the bowl, over the seat, and onto your freshly mopped floor.

The day I picked up my husband from a two-week stint in a rehab facility, two of our toilets…
