One of the many downsides to aging, regardless of the boon of still being vertical, is that we older folks often need help with everyday tasks. Those seemingly mundane chores that would take no time at all when we had juice in our joints.

Take mowing the lawn. Our ranch home is on a large, corner lot. When we first moved in, over twenty years ago, we bought a John Deere mower from the previous owners, for a song. The kind you sit your ass down on.

When my husband first mounted this beast for his maiden mow, we treated it as a lark. I plopped a straw hat on his head and took a photo for posterity.

It’s a good thing because that was the first and only time he used it. I don’t want to get into the “why” of this, but suffice it to say that my hubby is not an outdoorsy sort of dude.

As for me, if I’d attempted to use the JD on my own, I would have tumbled off and no doubt decapitated myself. That was a nonstarter as I am not handy with anything mechanized or sharp AF. Except for gassing up my Fiat, which needs fuel in order to, you know, run.

We sold the mower in a garage sale. As the buyer was very happy, I believe we got took.
