LIFE/HOME IMPROVEMENT
In a Fix
When it feels like your house is turning against you
Within the last several months, I have been doing my best to rise above a Tsunami of home-related shit. Literally. Backed-up toilets resulting in a hole in our downstairs bathroom’s ceiling. A backed up floor drain in the laundry room that had me buying Green Gobbler like it was going out of style until finally calling Roto Rooter. A barely-used, recently purchased dishwasher that inexplicably, stopped working.
Just as it does to our bodies, ageing makes its unavoidable mark on our homes. And as hard as I try to escape that Tsunami and dog peddle in the other direction, the crap is catching up on me.
Surely, many of you know what it’s like, existing on a fixed income, involuntarily or not, while nearly everything around you needs fixing. It wears you down, emotionally and physically.
I’m tired. Tired of thinking and worrying about the “What ifs?” Those alone can eat away at your brain until merely getting out of bed in the morning is a feat. And then there’s the news. A mental blow-by-blow reminder that the shit has indeed hit the fan.
Our home, which I love in spite of its relentless ass-kicking, was built in the 70s. I can never remember if it was 1975 or ’79, but regardless…
