Who knows what the these people are thinking but you could be right as I was recently turned down for yet another gig at my former employer. I could have aced it with my hands tied behind my back and the woman who would have been my “creative director” knew I could write rings around her as we go back a ways.

You’d think they’d want to hire someone who they know would do a great job but that’s not the case.
